VOLUNTARY WORK OPPORTUNITIES: HEAD OF MAINTENANCE
This is a job for a responsible and active person and involves a variety of tasks, including the supervision of other volunteers as well as taking care of the retreat houses, the water canalization system, the solar panels, the electric generators, the roads, and more.

You should have skills in carpentry, plumbing, electricity, painting and, if possible, a driving licence.
A six months’ commitment is required.
The job entails working six days a week.

REMUNERATION

We offer some pocket money after you’ve already been here six months. Food and lodging are free, and you can attend courses and retreats, time permitting.
Everybody is welcome, although obviously students and practitioners of Buddhism and those interested in His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s message of peace will get the most out of their time here.

It’s no problem if you only know English.

For further information, you can contact the director Anne Wenaas.
(You’ll find our e-mail address and phone number, as well as a contact form, at the end of this page).

Weekend voluntary work

We have a system whereby people can come spend one weekend a month volunteering their time in maintenance-related tasks – in exchange we offer room and board for the weekend, plus teachings or guided meditations. (You’ll find our e-mail address and phone number, as well as a contact form, at the end of this page.)

Volunteering

We also need other kinds of help, including translation, help with promotion, and many other activities. Some of these could even be done from your own home. If you’ve got any skills you think we might be interested in, let us know!

Your contribution is important and you can help in many ways: with your ideas and opinions, with voluntary work, by attending courses, by making a contribution to the different projects or by becoming a member of O Sel Ling.

We certainly don’t expect everyone that comes here to be Buddhist, but we do expect people to respect basic Buddhist ethics. That is why everyone who stays here is asked to abide by the five precepts:

To value life and not kill even the tiniest bug.
To be respectful towards that which belongs to someone else or to the whole community.
Not to lie.
Not to use intoxicants such as alcohol or drugs, since they disturb the mind.
To not engage in any sexual behaviour that might interfere with pre-existing relationships.

We require an initial minimum commitment of two weeks. If after two weeks everyone is satisfied, the commitment can be extended for up to three more months, and possibly longer if there should be interest in doing do.

The working hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., although this can change when there are courses going on.

Sometimes there’s a lot of work to do and at other times it is more relaxed – although people come as volunteers, we do expect them to give their all.

We need volunteers for the following areas:

Kitchen
Cooking assistant and cleaning
Maintenance: upkeep of the buildings and the sprinkler system, gardening, chopping firewood, repairs, etc.
Administration: accounting, correspondence, etc.
